The reconditioning process

Six steps. One tank back in service.

"Reconditioned" means something specific here — not a rinse and a prayer, but a documented, pressure-tested, grade-tagged process every single time.

1

Intake & logging

Every incoming tote is tagged with its prior contents and quarantined by product family. No guessing, no cross-contamination risk.

2

Disassembly & inspection

Bottle, valve, cage and pallet are separated. Steel is inspected for bends, cracks and corrosion. Anything that fails is flagged before washing begins.

3

Hot triple-wash

The bottle receives three high-pressure, high-temperature wash cycles with food-safe or industrial detergent matched to the prior product family.

4

Bottle swap (when needed)

If the existing bottle can't be brought to grade, a fresh HDPE bottle drops into the reclaimed cage — keeping the heaviest components in service.

5

Pressure & leak test

Every assembly is pressure-tested to manufacturer spec and checked for seal integrity at the valve, cap and bottle seam.

6

Grade & tag

Units receive a color-coded grade tag (Food, Industrial, Rinsed) plus a traceable wash record — audit-ready from day one.

Grades explained

Every tote has a grade. Here's what each one means.

Grade tells you the prior-contents family, wash protocol and documentation you get. It's the most important spec on the label.

★ Our most popular option — and almost always the greenest one for the job.

Rows of reconditioned IBC totes in our Peoria warehouse
Why IBC Solutions Illinois

One yard, the whole tote lifecycle.

Most suppliers do a single slice — they sell, or they wash, or they haul. We do the entire circle from our Peoria yard, which means fewer middlemen, honest grading with real prior-contents history, and a tank that never falls out of the loop.

  • Traceable grades — prior-contents logs and wash records on every reconditioned unit.
  • Reuse-first advice — we point you to the greenest tank that safely does the job.
  • Low-mile logistics — backhauled empties cut cost and emissions at once.
What sets us apart

Six things that make the difference.

1

Real prior-contents history

Every reconditioned unit ships with a documented chain of custody — prior product, wash cycle, grade — not just a color sticker.

2

Full lifecycle under one roof

We buy, clean, repair, grade, sell, haul and recycle. No hand-offs to mystery third parties mid-loop.

3

Reuse-first advice

We'll tell you if a rinsed tank safely does the job you need — even if that means a cheaper sale for us. It's the right call.

4

Backhaul logistics

Our trucks pick up your empties on the same routes they deliver full ones, cutting your disposal cost and eliminating empty miles.

5

Email-first speed

Every request is written, tracked and answered thoroughly — usually within one business day. No phone tag, no hold music.

6

Midwest-native stock

Our Peoria yard means short hauls across Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin — not a 1,200-mile coast-to-coast freight bill.

Safety & compliance

UN markings, food-grade docs and pressure tests — covered.

The right tank for the job isn't just about capacity — it's about certification, seal compatibility and documented prior contents. Here's what you need to know.

UN markings & hazardous liquids

If you're transporting regulated hazardous materials, look for the UN 31HA1/Y mark. This indicates the tote has been type-tested and certified. Ask us — we stock UN-rated units.

Food-grade compliance

Our food-grade units use natural HDPE bottles that meet FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. Every unit comes with a prior-contents log so you can verify suitability for your product.

Pressure testing

Every reconditioned unit is pressure-tested to manufacturer spec before it leaves our yard. If it leaks, it doesn't ship.

Valve compatibility

Standard butterfly valves use a 2-inch opening with EPDM seals. For chemical resistance, Viton seals are available. Always match the seal material to your product.

Seasonal demand

Tote inventory moves with the seasons. Plan accordingly.

Illinois agriculture, construction and food production drive sharply seasonal demand. Here's what to expect — and when to email us early.

Spring (March – May)

Peak demand from agriculture — fertilizer, herbicide and water storage. Order early or email us in February to reserve your allotment.

Summer (June – August)

Irrigation, dust control and construction water. Upcycled rainwater kits move fast. Lead times can stretch — plan ahead.

Fall (September – November)

Harvest-related demand: liquid molasses, vinegar, juice concentrate. Food-grade reconditioned totes go fast post-harvest.

Winter (December – February)

De-icing brine, road salt solutions and indoor heated storage. Band heaters and insulated jackets available. Lowest wait times for most grades.

Delivery & freight

Single tote or full truck — we move it.

Our Peoria yard is centrally located for efficient Midwest freight. Same-day local pickup is available for Peoria-area customers; most Midwest destinations receive orders within 1–3 business days via freight.

  • Local pickup — drive to our Peoria yard, same or next business day.
  • LTL freight — 1–8 totes, palletized and shipped on existing carrier lanes.
  • Full truckload — 40 totes per load, coordinated with backhaul pickups.
  • Flat delivery areas — IL, IA, IN, MO, WI and surrounding states; email for a freight quote farther out.

IBC glossary

The terms that actually matter when buying a tote.

IBC Tote

Intermediate Bulk Container — a 275 or 330-gallon liquid-storage tank with a steel cage, HDPE bottle, and pallet base.

Rebottled

A tote whose HDPE inner bottle has been replaced while the original steel cage and pallet are reused.

Reconditioned

A used tote that has been washed, inspected, tested, and re-graded for safe reuse.

UN 31HA1/Y

A UN certification mark indicating the tote is rated to transport regulated hazardous liquids.

Food Grade

A tote that has only ever held FDA-recognized food-safe products, documented and sanitized for reuse in food applications.

HDPE

High-Density Polyethylene — the translucent plastic used for the inner bottle of most IBC totes.

S60x6

The standard 6-inch screw thread on IBC tote lid openings; the most common cap and adapter interface.

Backhaul

Picking up empty totes on the return leg of a delivery run — eliminating deadhead miles and reducing per-unit freight cost.

Scope 3

Indirect supply-chain greenhouse-gas emissions. Packaging (including IBC totes) falls here; reconditioned tanks reduce this measurably.

Composite pallet

The structural base of an IBC tote, usually wood or plastic-composite, rated to support the full liquid load.

Our little obsession

Reuse isn't a slogan. It's math you can drag.

Why it matters

The greenest tote is the one we didn't have to build.

Manufacturing a new tote means smelting fresh steel and molding virgin plastic. Reconditioning skips almost all of it. That's why reuse always beats recycling in our book — and why we'll steer you to a reused tank whenever it's safe to.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reconditioned IBC tote?
A used IBC tote that has been triple-washed, inspected, pressure-tested and fitted with a clean or new bottle inside a reclaimed steel cage. It performs like new at a fraction of the cost and carbon footprint.
Do you buy used IBC totes?
Yes. Send us photos and the prior contents of your empties and we will quote them. Reusable tanks earn you cash; anything unusable we recycle responsibly so nothing is landfilled.
Where do you deliver?
We serve Illinois & the greater Midwest from our Peoria, Illinois yard, with local pickup and freight delivery for single totes up to full truckloads of 40.
How do I reach you — is there a phone number?
We work by email so every request is tracked and answered thoroughly, usually within one business day. Use any form on this site or email us directly.
What's the difference between "reconditioned" and "rebottled"?
Reconditioned means the existing HDPE bottle was washed, inspected and kept in the cage. Rebottled means the old bottle was swapped for a fresh one — same reclaimed cage and pallet. Both save the steel; rebottled gives you a virgin-equivalent inner surface.
Can I use a reconditioned tote for food or beverage products?
Yes, if it's graded Food Grade. Our food-grade units have only ever held FDA-recognized food-safe products such as syrups, oils or vinegar. You receive a prior-contents log and wash record with every unit.
What is the minimum order?
One tote. We sell singles, small lots and full truckloads of 40. Volume pricing kicks in at 4+ totes; email us for a fleet quote.
Do you offer UN-rated totes for hazardous liquids?
Yes. We stock UN 31HA1/Y rated new totes for regulated hazardous-material transport. Tell us your UN packing group and we'll confirm the right rating.
How long does delivery take?
Local Peoria pickup is same or next business day. Freight to most Midwest destinations runs 1–3 business days once a quote is confirmed. Full truckloads coordinate on a schedule we set at quote time.
What happens to totes you can't recondition?
Nothing gets landfilled if we can help it. Bottles are reground into HDPE pellets, steel cages go to metal recovery, and pallets are repaired or chipped. You get documentation if you need it for your sustainability reporting.
