IBC totes can be upcycled into rain tanks, compost systems, planters, ponds, aquaponics setups, worm farms, dust baths, fire pits (cage only), furniture frames, dog pools, greenhouse thermal buffers and more. The cage and bottle each lend themselves to different builds — always use food-grade tanks for anything involving animals or edible plants.

Easy (no cutting, basic tools)
1. Rain water tank. Connect a downspout to the inlet via a first-flush diverter, add a fine screen over the opening, and you have 275 gallons of garden water. Difficulty: beginner. Tools: basic plumbing fittings, screen mesh. Key gotcha: shade the bottle or you will grow algae inside a month.
2. Compost bin (static). Cut the top open, drill aeration holes around the lower sides, and use the cage as the structural wall. Lid the opening loosely. Difficulty: beginner. Tools: jigsaw or reciprocating saw, drill. Key gotcha: the bottle needs holes for drainage; skip them and the bottom goes anaerobic.
3. Stock water tank. Place on a level stand with the existing valve accessible and fill from a hose. Gravity-feeds a trough. Difficulty: beginner. Tools: none beyond the tote itself. Key gotcha: a food-grade tote is required for livestock water; check prior contents.
Easy-to-moderate (some cutting)
4. Raised garden bed / planter. Cut the top half off the bottle, leaving the cage for structural support. Fill with soil. Excellent depth for root crops. Difficulty: easy-moderate. Tools: jigsaw, PPE. Key gotcha: HDPE is food-safe but make sure you start with a food-grade unit for edible plants.
5. Duck pond or small livestock pond. Cut and remove the top section. Sink partially into ground for stability or leave on the pallet. Difficulty: easy-moderate. Tools: jigsaw. Key gotcha: ducks are hard on HDPE claws — add smooth edges and expect to repaint the bottle exterior for UV protection.
6. Worm farm (vermicomposting). Drill holes in the bottom tier for leachate drainage into a catch tray. Add bedding and worms. Difficult: easy-moderate. Tools: drill, basic woodworking for the stand. Key gotcha: temperature management — HDPE holds heat; site in shade and insulate from cold.
Moderate (plumbing or electrical involved)
7. Aquaponics system. One tote as fish tank, one top-cut as grow bed. Pump lifts water to the grow bed; gravity returns it to the fish. Difficulty: moderate. Tools: jigsaw, pump, plumbing fittings, bell siphon or timer. Key gotcha: cycle the biological filter for 4–6 weeks before adding fish; skipping this step kills fish.
8. Gravity-fed drip irrigation system. Elevate on a rated stand, adapt the S60x6 outlet to drip tubing, add a 150-mesh filter. Difficulty: moderate. Tools: stand construction (timber or steel), plumbing fittings, drip tubing. Key gotcha: the stand must be rated for 2,400+ lbs; a collapsing full tote is dangerous.
9. Chicken coop dust bath station. Cut the top section off and fill with dry sand, wood ash and diatomaceous earth mix. Hens love a wide, deep dust bath. Difficulty: moderate (cutting plus structural modification for access). Tools: jigsaw, grinder for edge smoothing. Key gotcha: smooth all cut edges with a grinder or file — raw HDPE cuts can injure birds.
Moderate-to-advanced (structural or advanced plumbing)
10. Backyard fire pit (cage only). Strip the bottle entirely and use the bare steel cage as a fire pit frame. Line the bottom with fire brick or crushed stone and build a fire inside. Difficulty: moderate (bottle removal requires cutting). Tools: angle grinder, protective gear. Key gotcha: never burn inside a tote that still has the HDPE bottle — burning HDPE produces toxic fumes. Cage only.
11. Furniture frame / side table. The cage structure is a sturdy geometric frame at exactly the right height for outdoor furniture. Add a plywood or timber top, apply exterior finish. Difficulty: moderate. Tools: woodworking tools for the top. Key gotcha: galvanized cage is rust-resistant but not indefinitely so; apply a clear coat if the tote will be outdoors permanently.
12. Greenhouse thermal buffer tank. Fill with water and place inside a greenhouse. Water has 3,000× the heat capacity of air by volume; a full tote absorbs solar heat during the day and releases it at night, damping temperature swings. Difficulty: advanced (requires greenhouse planning, thermal modeling). Tools: none beyond positioning. Key gotcha: a full tote is extremely heavy; ensure the greenhouse floor is rated for 2,400+ lbs per tank and that there is forklift or pump-truck access for placement.
One more: dog or duck swimming pool
Cut the top section off cleanly, smooth the edges and fill with clean water. Large dogs and ducks both take to them immediately. Difficulty: easy-moderate. Tools: jigsaw, file or grinder for edges. Key gotcha: a 275-gallon pool needs a way to drain — open the existing valve for emptying rather than tipping the tote, which is impractical at full weight.
General rules for all upcycling projects
Always start with a tote whose prior contents are known and safe for the intended use. Food-grade or rebottled for anything involving animals, edible plants or drinking water. Industrial-grade fine for fire pits, furniture or non-food planters.
When cutting HDPE, use a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade and keep it slow to avoid melting. Smooth all cut edges — raw cuts can be sharp and will stress-crack over time if left jagged. HDPE is not glued; it is welded, so construction adhesives do not bond it reliably. Use mechanical fasteners or design around the bottle’s natural shapes.
