Inspect the cage first
The steel cage carries the load and protects the bottle. Work around all four sides and check each weld where tubes meet. Surface rust on the coating is cosmetic; pitting corrosion that has compromised tube wall thickness is a structural concern. Look specifically for bent verticals, deformed top rails and missing or cracked cross-bracing.
A deformed cage can shift load unevenly onto the bottle, cause stacking instability and indicate the tote was dropped or impacted. Any significant deformation is a reason to decline the unit regardless of how good the bottle looks.
Inspect the bottle
Remove the cap and shine a light inside. Look at the corners and lower third of the bottle — that is where stress cracks form first from repeated filling cycles. Crazing (a web of fine surface cracks) shows the HDPE has fatigued and may be approaching the end of its useful life.
Discoloration is a clue about prior contents. Some staining is normal; a dark or amber residue ring at the fill line, or a chemical odor that persists after washing, suggests a product the bottle absorbed. If you cannot identify the discoloration and the prior-contents record is unclear, treat the unit as industrial grade at best.

Inspect the valve
Open and close the valve fully and feel for resistance, grinding or wobbling. A butterfly valve should seat cleanly with no visible gap when closed; a ball valve should turn through 90 degrees without sticking. Inspect the S60x6 outlet threads for nicks, crossed threads or deformation — a damaged thread leaks and may not accept an adapter.
Fill the tote partially with water and open the valve to verify there is no weeping from the valve body or the outlet seal. Valve replacement is inexpensive, but a buyer should know they are taking on that cost before agreeing to a price.
Inspect the pallet
Tip the tote slightly (or ask the seller to lift it with a forklift) so you can see under the pallet base. Check the wood runners for rot, deep splits and missing sections. Both forklift entry pockets must be clear and unobstructed. A soft or partially rotted board is a safety hazard — the pallet can fail under load or during a forklift move.
- Soft or punky wood — rot, reject or negotiate pallet replacement
- Missing or broken boards in the deck — structural weakness
- Blocked forklift entries — refuse; cannot be safely moved
- Protruding nails or staples — safety and puncture risk for tines
Verify the paperwork
A reconditioned tote without documentation is just an old tank of unknown history. Ask for the prior-contents record (what the tote originally carried), the wash or sanitizing record, and the grade tag that ties those records to this specific unit. For food-grade use, these documents are mandatory — not optional.
Walk away from any tote where the seller cannot produce prior-contents documentation, offers only verbal assurance, or has grade tags that are clearly generic rather than unit-specific. A small price premium for documented totes is almost always cheaper than the liability of an undocumented one.
