What HDPE handles well
High-density polyethylene is chemically tough. It shrugs off most dilute and many concentrated acids and bases, salt solutions, alcohols and a broad set of water-based products. That versatility is a big part of why the material became the standard for tote bottles.
Where it struggles
HDPE has real limits worth respecting:
- Strong oxidizers can attack it over time
- Some hydrocarbons and solvents cause swelling or permeation
- Elevated temperatures soften it and lower its ratings
- Certain products require specific liners or seals
Check before you fill
Always consult a chemical-compatibility chart for your specific product and concentration, and confirm the seal material too — EPDM and Viton have very different resistances. The tank and the gasket both have to be compatible, not just one.
Fire safety
HDPE is a plastic and it burns. A tote holding a flammable liquid is a serious fire risk, so follow flammable-storage codes: keep away from ignition sources, provide proper ventilation and containment, and never exceed permitted storage quantities. For fuels, grounding and bonding during transfer also matter.
