Reconditioners test incoming totes for residual prior contents, odor, bottle integrity and cage condition before assigning a grade. Common concerns are chemical residue, biofilm, stress cracks and contamination that would rule out food service. Traceability of the prior product is the foundation of it all.

It starts with history
Before any hands-on test, we log what the tank previously held. Prior contents determine everything downstream: whether food-grade is even possible, what wash chemistry to use, and what to inspect for. A tote with unknown history is treated conservatively.
Residue and odor
After washing, we check for residual product and odor. Smell is a surprisingly good first screen — a lingering chemical scent means the bottle held onto something and may not clear food-grade. Persistent residue routes a tank to rebottling or industrial grade instead.
Bottle integrity
The bottle has to hold liquid reliably, so we inspect and test it:
- Visual check for stress cracks, bulges and crazing
- Pressure and leak testing of the assembled unit
- Valve and cap seal checks at the outlet
- Confirmation the bottle sits properly in the cage
Cage and pallet
The steel cage carries the load, so we look for corrosion, bent tubes and weld failures, and confirm the pallet is sound with clear forklift entry. A great bottle in a compromised cage is not a safe tote.
Then, and only then, a grade
A grade tag goes on after the tank passes the tests appropriate to it. That is what separates a documented reconditioned tote from a rinsed-and-hoped one — and why buyers can trust the label instead of guessing.
